📦 Amazon FBA — Barcode Glossary

What Is an FNSKU Barcode?

FNSKU (Fulfillment Network SKU) is the unique barcode Amazon assigns to every FBA seller's every product. If you ship to Amazon FBA warehouses, every single unit must carry an FNSKU label — it is how Amazon tracks your inventory and distinguishes your stock from other sellers listing the same item.

FNSKU Defined

Full name: Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit

Format: Starts with the letter X, followed by 9 alphanumeric characters — for example, X001ABCDEF.

Barcode type: Code 128 — a linear (1D) barcode that can encode uppercase letters, lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens.

How it is assigned: Amazon Seller Central generates an FNSKU automatically when you create or approve a listing. Each unique combination of ASIN + seller account + item condition (New, Used, etc.) gets its own FNSKU. Two sellers listing the exact same product will have different FNSKUs.

What it does inside the warehouse: When a warehouse associate scans an incoming unit, Amazon's system reads the FNSKU and knows immediately which seller's account the item belongs to, which listing it maps to, and how to route it to the correct storage bin. Without an FNSKU label, Amazon cannot accept or process your shipment.

FNSKU vs UPC vs ASIN — What's the Difference?

Sellers new to FBA often confuse these three identifiers. Here is a clear side-by-side breakdown:

Where to Find Your FNSKU in Seller Central

Amazon assigns the FNSKU as soon as your listing is live. Here is where to locate it:

1

Open Manage Inventory

Log in to Seller Central → Inventory → Manage All Inventory.

2

Find the Product

Locate the listing, then click the dropdown arrow next to the "Edit" button.

3

Select "Print Item Labels"

Amazon opens a label preview dialog that displays the FNSKU barcode.

4

Read the FNSKU

The label preview shows the FNSKU in X001XXXXXXX format directly below the barcode.

Need your full list? Go to Inventory Reports → Active Listings Report and download the file. Open it in Excel or Google Sheets and look for the fnsku column — it lists the FNSKU for every active listing in your account at once.

Why Does Amazon Require FNSKU Instead of UPC?

Amazon's default inventory mode is called commingled inventory: when multiple sellers send units of the same UPC, Amazon mixes all those units together in a shared bin. While this speeds up fulfillment, it creates a serious problem — if one seller ships a counterfeit or defective unit, it can end up in another seller's shipment to a buyer.

FNSKU labels solve this by physically separating each seller's inventory. When you label every unit with your FNSKU, Amazon stores your stock in bins assigned exclusively to your account. A counterfeit unit from another seller cannot reach your buyers, and a return of your product cannot drift into another seller's count.

For most FBA sellers — especially those selling branded, private-label, or high-value goods — using FNSKU is the right choice. It adds a small labeling step, but it gives you full control over your inventory quality.

How to Print FNSKU Labels for Free

There are two main options:

Option 1 — Seller Central

Use the built-in "Print Item Labels" dialog in Seller Central. Works fine for small quantities, but it is limited to 40 labels per print job and cannot batch across multiple SKUs at once.

📋

Option 2 — Bulk Barcode Generator (Recommended)

Export your full FNSKU list from the Active Listings Report, paste it into Bulk Barcode Generator, select Code 128, choose the Avery 5160 layout, and download a print-ready PDF. No row limit. No signup.

Ready to print FNSKU labels? Paste your FNSKU list from Seller Central into Bulk Barcode Generator — select Code 128, choose Avery 5160 layout, and download a print-ready PDF in seconds. Frequently Asked Questions

What does FNSKU stand for?
FNSKU stands for Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit. It is a unique identifier that Amazon assigns to each product listing in your seller account. When you send inventory to Amazon FBA, every unit must have an FNSKU label so Amazon can track it separately from other sellers' inventory.
Is FNSKU the same as UPC or ASIN?
No. FNSKU, UPC, and ASIN are three different identifiers. FNSKU is your seller-specific Amazon barcode (e.g. X001ABCDEF) printed on a physical label. UPC is a universal retail barcode registered with GS1. ASIN is Amazon's internal product ID (e.g. B09ABCDEFG) used in search and listings — it is not a barcode and does not appear on a physical label.
What barcode type is FNSKU?
FNSKU barcodes use Code 128 encoding. Code 128 can encode letters, numbers, and hyphens, making it suitable for the alphanumeric FNSKU format. Bulk Barcode Generator automatically encodes your FNSKU values in Code 128 with the correct check character.
What size should FNSKU labels be?
Amazon recommends FNSKU labels that are at least 1 inch tall and 2 inches wide. The most widely used size is 1" × 2-5/8" (Avery 5160), which gives 30 labels per sheet. Avery 5160 sheets are available at most office supply stores and work with both inkjet and laser printers.
