Why PNG for Barcodes?

🖼️

Universal Compatibility

PNG works in Word, Excel, InDesign, Photoshop, Canva, and every design tool. Upload to any e-commerce platform or send to any printer without format conversion.

🔍

Lossless Quality

PNG uses lossless compression — barcode edges stay crisp and clean. Unlike JPEG, there are no compression artifacts that can blur bar edges and cause scan failures.

📦

Bulk ZIP Download

Upload your CSV or Excel file with SKU values, generate all barcodes in one click, and download a ZIP archive — one PNG per SKU, filename equals the barcode value.

Generate Barcode PNGs in 3 Steps

1

Paste or Upload Your Barcode Values

Paste values one per line directly into the text box, or upload a CSV or Excel file. Pick the column that contains your barcode values — SKUs, GTINs, order numbers, whatever you need.

2

Choose Format and Resolution

Select your barcode symbology (Code 128 is the universal default). Choose 300 DPI for print-ready labels or 96 DPI for screen and web display. Select PNG as the export format.

3

Download PNG ZIP

Click Generate — every barcode value produces one PNG file named after its value. All files are packaged into a single ZIP download. No upload to any server, no waiting.

PNG vs Other Export Formats

Export Format Best For Resolution File Size Batch Export
PNG Design files, print, web 300 DPI ~20–50 KB each ZIP
PDF (N-up) Avery label sheets High 1 file, all labels
PDF (single) Thermal printers, exact size High 1 file per label
SVG Scalable vector (infinite DPI) Vector ~5–10 KB each ZIP
ZPL Zebra thermal printers only Native DPI Very small

Common Use Cases for Barcode PNGs

E-commerce

E-commerce Platforms

Upload product barcode images to WooCommerce, Amazon Seller Central, eBay, or Shopify listings — PNG is accepted everywhere.

Print & Design

Design & Print Shops

Designers embed PNG barcodes into hang tags, packaging artwork, and product label designs before sending files to the print shop.

Office

Word & Excel Documents

Insert barcode PNGs into inventory spreadsheets, product catalogues, price lists, and purchase order documents without any special software.

Systems

Internal Systems

Batch-import barcode image files into WMS, ERP, or PIM systems that require image assets linked to product records.

What DPI Should Your Barcode PNG Be?

Resolution (DPI — dots per inch) determines how sharp your barcode prints. The correct DPI depends on how you plan to use the PNG file.

Use Case Recommended DPI Notes
Print labels (commercial) 300 DPI Standard for crisp print — safe default for all print workflows
Office printer labels 203 DPI Sufficient for most desktop label printers
Screen / website display 72–96 DPI Smaller file size, not suitable for print
Thermal printer workflow Use ZPL or thermal PDF instead PNG is for design files; ZPL is native to Zebra printers

The minimum recommended DPI for printing a scannable barcode is 203 DPI — the native resolution of most direct thermal label printers. Below this threshold, bar edges may become ragged and cause scan failures in poor lighting conditions. 300 DPI is the recommended safe choice for any print workflow, and is the default export resolution in this tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What resolution should a barcode PNG be for printing?
For printing on product labels, use a minimum of 203 DPI — the standard resolution for thermal label printers. For offset or laser print on paper labels, 300 DPI is recommended. Bulk Barcode Generator exports barcode PNGs at 300 DPI by default, which is suitable for both office printing and commercial label printing.
Can I use a barcode PNG in Word, Excel, or Google Docs?
Yes. PNG is the most compatible image format for office applications. Insert the barcode PNG using Insert > Picture in Word or Excel. For Google Docs and Sheets, use Insert > Image. The barcode will retain its quality as long as you do not scale it down below the minimum print size (roughly 1 inch wide for Code 128).
Does the PNG barcode have a transparent background?
By default, barcode PNGs have a white background, which is recommended for printing (transparent barcodes can cause scanning problems if placed on coloured backgrounds). If you need a transparent PNG for design overlay work, choose the transparent background option in the export settings.
Can I batch download multiple barcode PNGs at once?
Yes. Upload a CSV or Excel file with your barcode values, choose PNG export, and download a ZIP file containing one PNG per barcode value. The file is named after the barcode value for easy identification. There is no row limit — generate 10 or 10,000 PNG barcodes in one batch.
Is PNG or SVG better for barcode images?
SVG is technically superior for scalability — an SVG barcode can be enlarged to any size without quality loss. However, PNG is more universally compatible: most e-commerce platforms, office apps, and label design software accept PNG but not SVG. Use PNG for general use and SVG when you need scalable vector output for professional design software.
